Firm with health care expertise wins contract to build skin package for The New Wishard
Wishard awarded the external building façade package for The New Wishard, as well as the skin and related components of the ambulatory care building and the south elevation of the parking garage, to a firm with a rich history of health care experience and plans to heavily incorporate local labor.
Wishard opened sealed bids for the building enclosure package on April 26, and Enclos Corp of Eagan, Minn. produced the low bid of $38,999,000. The Board of Trustees of Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, which operates Wishard, approved the award.
“We are pleased to announce the award of this package to a firm that is committed to assembling a project team made up of individuals and organizations here in Central Indiana to carry out this important part of the project,” said Matthew Gutwein, President and CEO of Health and Hospital Corporation. “It was a very competitive bid process, and we saw strong interest from leaders in the industry. This award will enable us to take advantage of low construction costs and will contribute to our goals to achieve the City of Indianapolis standard for minority-, women- and veteran-owned business participation.”
More than 90 percent of the subcontracted field work included in the Enclos bid will go to local subcontractors. In addition, more than 85 percent of the firm’s labor hours, in excess of 120,000 hours for The New Wishard façade program, will be provided with local labor, with the remainder being comprised largely of internal management time.
Workers will begin to install the package on the hospital in the late spring of 2011. The contractor will begin installation on the parking garage in the fall of 2011, followed by the ambulatory care building in the summer of 2012.
“Enclos is an outstanding firm with a proven track record in health care projects,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, CEO and Medical Director of Wishard Health Services. “Its commitment to achieving good and cost-effective work for health care centers mirrors our own devotion to these principles in delivering excellent quality health care to the people of Indianapolis.”
The package includes the exterior panels, windows and shell components. It does not include the roofs of the structures, which Wishard will include in a future core and shell package after the Transformation Team finalizes system details.
“We are so excited to be involved with such an important project for our local community,” said Enclos’s Adam Peine, a native and lifelong Indianapolis resident who will run the project for Enclos. “There are only a handful of companies in the world qualified to do this job, and none of them really have the experience with health care facilities that we do, and we intend to lead the way in meeting or exceeding scheduling milestones, diversity goals and other project requirements. In addition to participating in the construction of a top-quality hospital, we look forward to working with City of Indianapolis leaders to make a positive contribution to the community.”
Enclos is just completing work on the Colket Translational Research Building for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and starting work on two new hospital projects: San Francisco General Hospital, and the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay. Enclos is recognized for its specialized work with health care facilities, which has led to its involvement in hospital and research projects across the nation. The Enclos portfolio of completed work includes a long line of health care facilities including the Gonda Building at Mayo Clinic, the Harvard School Research Building, the NYU School of Medicine Smilow Research Center, the Kaiser Downey Medical Center and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Virginia.
