The Eskenazi Health Stroke Center provides comprehensive care, including prevention, diagnosis and acute treatment for stroke.
Strokes happen suddenly and require a quick response. Drawing on decades of experience in stroke treatment and prevention, the Eskenazi Health Stroke Center staff immediately jumps into action when a patient experiencing stroke symptoms arrives. The stroke team consists of certified vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, neurointensivist and board-certified stroke registered nurses. In 2017 the Eskenazi Health Stroke Center was certified by The Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center.
The center provides state-of-the-art stroke care for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Stroke interventions at Eskenazi Health include diagnostic imaging such as computed tomography scans (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), medication therapy, and various types of procedures such as mechanical thrombectomy, aneurysm coiling and clippings, craniotomy and ventricular drain placement. Stroke care is also integrated with other clinical care such as pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, trauma and burn care.
The stroke team works with other clinical staff to create care plans for patients who have experienced a stroke. These plans include early and frequent rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational and speech therapy for inpatients and outpatient, as well as spiritual care and pet therapy. They assist patients with transitioning to outpatient care and teach them warning signs to look for and about healthy lifestyle habits they can adopt that will decrease the risk of another stroke.
